India (Commonwealth Union)_ Prime Minister Narendra Modi touched 4,078 consecutive days in office as of July 25, 2025, which is a landmark achievement in his political career. Accordingly, Modi has now broken former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi‘s record of 4,077 continuous days in office, which she served from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977. This achievement makes Modi the second longest-serving prime minister in Indian history, behind only the country’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who served for 6,130 days without a break.

Modi’s political journey has been marked by a number of firsts. He is the first and only prime minister born after India’s independence and also the longest-serving prime minister from a non-Congress party. A native of Gujarat, a non-Hindi-speaking state, he is also the longest-serving PM from outside the Hindi heartland. Another distinction that sets Modi apart is that he is the only non-Congress leader to have completed two full terms as Prime Minister and to return to power with a clear majority in both 2014 and 2019. In doing so, he matched a record last seen under Indira Gandhi, who won a full mandate in 1971.

Notably, Modi is only the second Indian Prime Minister after Nehru to lead a party to three consecutive national election victories in 2014, 2019, and 2024. His winning streak extends beyond national politics; before taking charge at the Centre, Modi had already won three consecutive assembly elections in Gujarat as Chief Minister in 2002, 2007, and 2012. That makes it six straight electoral victories as the face of his party, an unmatched record among India’s prime ministers and chief ministers. Among India’s ten longest-serving prime ministers, six belong to the Indian National Congress. Modi now joins a small group of non-Congress leaders who made that list, alongside Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Morarji Desai, and V.P. Singh.

Additionally, Modi’s popularity has reached international recognition. He is India’s popular prime minister, having garnered 27 foreign honors. Accordingly, Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, Brazil, and Namibia recently awarded their highest civilian honors to him in recognition of his leadership and worldwide influence. Modi was born into a low-income middle-class family in Vadnagar, Gujarat, and started his career serving tea at a railway station with his father. Later, he progressed through the ranks of the BJP and RSS, eventually becoming India’s 14th Prime Minister and Gujarat’s Chief Minister. Modi has established himself as a key figure in modern Indian history, influencing both internal politics and India’s global standing over the last decade.
