Mondrian Singapore Duxton… opens…

-

The Mondrian Singapore Duxton, nestled in the heart of Singapore’s Duxton Hill, is a testament to Mondrian’s commitment to creating boundary-pushing, immersive, experiences, rooted in culture, design and art.

Leading design provocateur Robbyn Carter and Singapore’s DP Architects tap the Lion City’s rich past, green lungs, trade routes, and a sculptural approach to space, to create a unique statement in design.

Joining the brand’s properties in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Seoul, London, Cannes, and Doha, Mondrian Singapore Duxton is the new addition to the Mondrian family of hotels, Since it was launched by Ian Schrager in LA in 1996, Mondrian Hotels have been brought to life by the quality of their people and a commitment to creativity, art, and the unexpected.

Studio Carter, headquartered in LA, and DP Architects in Singapore have teamed up to break bold new ground with 302-room a ‘deconstructed shophouse’ as the overarching design inspiration for the 302 roomed Mondrian Singapore Duxton.  The property, rooted in Singaporean culture, rises above the colourful historical shophouses of Chinatown and looks to the future with its sweeping views of the CBD skyline.

Robbyn Carter, Principal and founder, who spent 6 years in Singapore living in a shophouse before returning to her native Los Angeles 3 years ago, has captured the soul of the Duxton Hill experience, transforming it into a new statement in design.

The interior design showcases a perfect harmony between contemporary and traditional elements, seamlessly blending Singapore’s rich heritage with modern sophistication alongside an impressive collection of private artworks by Dawn Ng, André Wee and Ian Davenport.

The seamless connectivity built into the design of the development, extends the vibrancy of this precinct during the day and into the night.  The Mondrian public linkway running through the property for the first time connects the Duxton Hill neighbourhood with the d streets of Keong Saik, Craig and Neil Roads filled with bars and restaurants. It will create a new culinary epicenter for food and drink lovers across the region, with some of Singapore’s hottest operators opening new F&B concepts over the coming months.

The distinctive Shophouse Suites bring to life traditional features that have a modern twist with vaulted ceilings and arched wooden shutters. The suites have been designed to transform from bedrooms to meeting or entertaining spaces with Murphy-style beds.

Inspiration abounds in the hotel rooms.

Mondrian Singapore Duxton

Carter was inspired by the sense of community of the neighbourhood, eschewed a stuffy conventional hotel lobby for a living, breathing restaurant and bar vibe taken with the big idea of the deconstructed shophouse, which manifests throughout the hotel at Mondrian Singapore Duxton.

The designers who did not want the lifts and reception to be the main thing when a guest walks in, created it to be more like walking into a vibrant, happening hotspot looking out onto the lush and beautiful greenery of the garden. The furniture is custom made and very Mondrian, playing with reflections in large wavy metal mirrors, to echo the fact that there is a lot of water around Singapore, which distorts and challenges perceptions.

At Bottega di Carna, the show kitchen is bursting with flames from the Josper grill, bustling chefs, and cuts of meat displayed in a jewel box showcase.

Jungle Ballroom enhances the feeling of stepping into a hidden sanctuary where the ‘secret tunnel’ arched entrance is covered in greenery that lights up at night, and this evokes the feeling of discovering a hidden gem within the hotel.   psychedelic, kaleidoscopic artworks and visual cocktails composed of photos of exotic blooms helping provide sparkle to the space.

With a 360-degree backdrop of the glittering Singapore skyline and the terracotta rooftops of the surrounding Chinatown shophouses, the jewel on Mondrian’s crown is the 1970s Hollywood-inspired Canyon Club Rooftop Bar and Poolside Cabanas. Retro-vibed low velvet pink-hued seating sets the scene at the bar, leading to vibrant striped cabanas by the water.
