Europe UK (Commonwealth Union) – Reduced work days in a week have historically been a key focus in recognizing the workers needs to attend to personal activities such as family and religious activities. Many corporations recognized the need for giving employees personal space and that it would improve productivity.

Cambridge social scientists have been conducting a study on the largest international trial exploring a 4-day working week.

In 2022, 61 organizations in the UK committed to a 20 percent lowering in working hours for their entire staff for 6 months, having no reduction in wages.

The findings Indicate that a 4-day week lowers stress as well as illness in the workforce, and assists in retaining workers.

71 percent of employees self-reported lesser amounts of “burnout”, while 39 percent indicated that they were less stressed, when contrasted to the beginning of the trial.

The researchers discovered 65 percent lesser sick days, and a 57 percent decline in the staff numbers leaving participating companies, when contrasted to the same period in the prior year.

Company revenue was hardly impacted as the trial period was underway, even going up marginally by 1.4 percent on average for the 23 organizations able to give data.

A report of the findings presented to UK lawmakers, had some 92 percent of companies participating in the UK pilot programme (56 out of 61) made indications of proceeding further with the 4-day working week, with 18 companies verifying permanent change.

“When you realise that day has allowed you to be relaxed and rested, and ready to absolutely go for it on those other four days, you start to realise that to go back to working on a Friday would feel really wrong – stupid actually,” said the CEO of a consultancy organization involved in the trial.

The trials did include certain conditions such as reduced holidays, with some concerns over possible work loads but showing overall positive signs.
