ENGLAND _ CU – Nottingham universities had more than 800 active Covid cases as students broke up for Christmas. A combined 699 students and staff tested positive for the virus at the University of Nottingham (UoN) alone, according to its most recent data.

This doesn’t and shouldn’t come as a surprise as the rules and regulations have been relaxed and people seemed to think that once vaccinated they are immune to the disease

Nottingham Trent University (NTU), meanwhile, had 112 active cases on December 15.

The figures show cases up until the end of the Autumn term at UoN and NTU, which paused studies for the festive period on December 17 and December 10 respectively.

This would have accounted for a significant percentage of Nottingham’s Covid cases as it became a hotbed for the virus earlier this month, with parts overtaking London in terms of case rates.

According to government data, there were a total of 4,099 cases of Covid in Nottingham recorded in the seven days up to December 17, with a case rate of 1.216 per 100 people.

Overall in the UK, there were a total of 87,699 cases.

The data, published by the universities, shows a dramatic surge in positive Covid cases, particularly at the University of Nottingham, which had 78 active cases on December 7.

Almost 200 students and staff tested positive on December 14 alone.

However, the university says that its case rate data may be higher than others as it carries out its own asymptomatic testing programme.

The most recent statistics show there are a total of 4,620 cases in Nottingham, with a case rate of 1.37 per 100 people.

There were 10,491 positive cases in the wider county in the same period.
