Mumbai Apollo Hospitals successfully performs a major Liver Resection Surgery!

India (Commonwealth Union)_ The major surgery was performed on an octogenarian woman patient. 87-year-old Sonabai Sawant from Karjat , who visited the Apollo Hospitals in Navi Mumbai with a liver MRI report. Following the examination, doctors diagnosed a melon-sized tumor in her liver’s left lobe.

A multidisciplinary team of specialists at Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai performed a timely hepatectomy on the old patient that gave her a new lease of life. The large tumor in her liver was pressing her stomach, preventing her from eating. In addition to being skinny and fragile, she had a single kidney and hypertension, making her health condition urgent and operation risky.

According to Dr Shailesh Sable, Chief Transplant Surgeon at Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai, the patient’s family was eager to improve her health and did not consider her age and comorbidities to be a barrier. She was very susceptible to morbidity and death. However, her family wanted to remove the tumor as it had a major impact on her lifestyle. He said: “With a lot of reluctance, I agreed to let her undergo the process of tumor evaluation and fitness tests which she passed effortlessly.”

Following many iterations with a multidisciplinary team, she had a surgery without any complications. The clinical team included the following physicians and other staff: Dr. Shailesh Sable, Consultant, HPB & Liver Transplant Surgery; Dr. Ketul Shah, Consultant, HPB & Liver Transplant Surgery; Dr. Makrand Karpe, Clinical Associate, Surgical Oncology; Dr. Deep Mashru, Clinical Associate, Surgical Oncology; Dr. Ambreen Sawant, Anesthetist; Dr. Pinky, Anesthetist; Dr Gunadhar Padhi, Consultant, Critical Care Specialist; Dr Suvadeep Sen, Consultant, Critical Care Specialist, as well as the nursing and physiotherapy team. On the second day after the surgery, she was released from the critical care unit and was made to walk. After a week, during her clinical visit to the doctor, she brought home-made sweets prepared by herself.
