Need for Autistic support

Europe, UK (Commonwealth Union) – A review has outlined 19 recommendations aimed at bolstering the entry, retention, and success of autistic individuals in the workforce. Despite the desire of most autistic individuals to work, only a minority—3 in 10—are presently employed, primarily due to pervasive stigma and a dearth of comprehension regarding their requirements. Embracing greater neurodiversity in workplace cultures stands to address this gap, potentially filling job vacancies and fostering economic expansion by harnessing the untapped capabilities of numerous individuals.

The Department for Work and Pensions has launched a comprehensive review proposing significant modifications to the work environment to facilitate autistic individuals in securing and maintaining employment. The current statistics reveal that merely 30 percent of working-age autistic individuals are employed, compared to half of all disabled individuals and 80 percent of non-disabled individuals. Despite this, a majority of autistic individuals express a desire to have an employment opportunity.

Funded by the charity Autistica, The Buckland Review on Autism Employment incorporates insights from both employers and individuals on the autism spectrum. It outlines collaborative strategies for businesses and government to implement over the coming five years. These initiatives may encompass highlighting achievements in autism employment, initiating trial initiatives within both national and international corporations, and offering personalized support to autistic employees in the workplace.

Sir Robert Buckland KC MP says “It has been a tremendous privilege to compile this report, and to hear from hundreds of autistic people about their experiences. This is all about them, and we couldn’t have done it without their help.”

He also indicated that the review has the potential to significantly transform the lives of individuals with autism and their families. I urge employers and government officials to take the lead in implementing these recommendations and turning them into tangible outcomes.

The review is likely to raise awareness with employers that presents a framework for employment for autistic individuals.
