Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ During a session in the House of Commons, British Sikh MP Preet Kaur Gill raised concerns about transnational repression affecting members of the Sikh community in the UK. Referring to a purported “hit list” targeting British Sikhs, she pressed Security Minister Tom Tugendhat on the measures being taken by the British government to address this issue.
Gill, serving as the shadow minister for primary care and public health, highlighted the alleged targeting of Sikh activists by agents with connections to India. Without naming individuals, she drew attention to reported assassination plots against Sikhs abroad and questioned the steps being taken to ensure the safety of British Sikh activists.
In her statement, Gill pointed out that Five Eyes nations, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United States, and the United Kingdom, have expressed concerns about these actions. She emphasized the need for the British government to demonstrate similar resolve in defending the democratic rights of British Sikhs.
In response, Minister Tugendhat affirmed that the government continuously evaluates potential threats to individual rights and safety across the UK. He assured that specific threats against British citizens by foreign powers would prompt immediate action, underscoring that the safety of the Sikh community is paramount.
Asserting equality for all British citizens regardless of ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation, Tugendhat reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding the Sikh community. He emphasized the close partnership with Five Eyes allies and pledged to take necessary action should the situation demand it.
The discussion comes amid international scrutiny over allegations of Indian government involvement in the targeting of Sikh activists abroad. Recent incidents, including the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada and conspiracy accusations in the US, have heightened tensions between India and countries like Canada and the United States.
