Netflix Cracks Down on Password Sharing in…

India (Commonwealth)_Hey there, Netflix users in India! We’ve got some news to share about changes that are happening on the streaming service. Starting from July 20, 2021, Netflix is introducing new limitations on password sharing to crack down on customers who are using an account without actually paying for it.

So, here’s the deal: Netflix wants to ensure that its service is being used as intended, which means it should be accessed only by members of the same household. This means no more sharing passwords with family or friends who don’t live with you.

The reason behind this change is that account sharing undermines Netflix’s ability to invest in and improve the service. With an estimated 100 million households sharing passwords, it’s become a significant challenge for the company. As a result, they recorded a drop in subscribers last year, causing some concern among investors.

But fear not! Netflix has a plan to tackle this issue and ensure its revenue base remains strong. They are implementing these changes in 103 countries and territories, including India, and have already rolled them out in some other countries earlier this year.

Now, let’s see how this will affect you as an Indian subscriber:

If you are the account owner, you’ll be asked to set a primary location for your account, which should be your household. This way, everyone living in your house can still access Netflix, and your own accessibility won’t be affected.

If you’ve been using someone else’s Netflix account and don’t live with them, unfortunately, you won’t be able to access the service anymore. You’ll need to create your own account if you want to continue enjoying Netflix.

The good news is that you can transfer a profile if you have a friend, girlfriend, or boyfriend using your account outside of your household. This means they can transfer their profile to a new membership account that they have paid for, so they can continue watching their favorite shows and movies.

You might be wondering how Netflix plans to detect password sharing. They’ll be using information such as IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity to identify if devices are being used within the same household. If they find any issues, the account holder will be notified.

Now, let’s talk about how Netflix’s current performance is reflecting these changes in India. As of the second quarter of 2023, Netflix has surpassed Wall Street expectations with 5.9 million subscribers in India and a global subscriber base of 238.4 million. Their revenue is also on the rise, with Q2 revenue reaching $8.2 billion.

The recent crackdown on password sharing has actually added a significant number of subscribers to Netflix’s list. By restricting usage to a single household, the company is encouraging more people to sign up for their own subscriptions. This strategy has been successful in increasing the number of subscribers, as nobody wants to miss out on binge-watching their favorite shows and movies.

So, there you have it, Netflix users in India. These changes may have an impact on how you access the service, but it’s all in an effort to improve the platform and ensure its sustainability for the long term. Remember, you can still enjoy all the amazing features like Transfer Profile and Manage Access and Devices within your household. Happy streaming!
