Europe, UK (Commonwealth Union) – A recent announcement indicated that over a thousand properties have been revitalized for the benefit of Armed Forces personnel and their families, thanks to a £400 million investment in military accommodation.

Last September, the Ministry of Defence (MOD) launched an extensive refurbishment program targeting long-term vacant houses, fueled by an additional £400 million injection into military housing.

This initiative has enabled the MOD to significantly augment the stock of top-tier residences accessible to service families.

James Cartlidge, Minister for Defence Procurement, emphasized, that enhancing accommodation for the service personnel and their families remains a paramount concern. Hence, they are committing an extra £400 million towards the maintenance and enhancement of homes.

“I am grateful for the collaborative work between the Defence Infrastructure Organisation and contractors to ensure as many of our people as possible have access to high-quality homes, which will include damp and mould improvements to around 5,000 properties.”

The houses, once considered uninhabitable due to age and condition, have now undergone extensive refurbishments thanks to the efforts of the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), collaborating with contractors VIVO Defence Services and Amey. These renovations were made possible through funding prioritized for accommodation in last year’s Defence Command Paper Refresh.

From all over the UK, over a thousand properties, including 142 in Tidworth, Wiltshire; 134 in Aldershot, Hampshire; 48 in Brize Norton, Oxfordshire; and 41 in Catterick, Yorkshire, have been revitalized to meet necessary standards. The refurbishments ranged from installing new kitchens and bathrooms to upgrading boilers, carpets, and curtains.

Many properties received a comprehensive overhaul, encompassing rewiring, new heating systems, replacement doors and windows, internal redecoration, and enhancements to outdoor spaces. As a result, all completed homes are now cozy, secure, energy-efficient, and, what is significant it that it is available to military personnel and their families.

The economic impacts from the recent pandemic have seen the affordable housing among others being a key issue as key concern for individuals across the world with many calls for proper solutions to make home ownership a possibility for more people. The possible expansion of the moves made by the MOD could be a possible step that could be replicated.
