Nigerian governor vows justice after deadly attacks

Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ In the aftermath of a tragic series of attacks claiming over 100 lives in Nigerian villages, Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau state has vowed to ensure that the perpetrators face justice. Expressing his dismay, he lamented how the season meant for peace and joy has been marred by the actions of evildoers.

The attacks, which originated in the Bokkos area, spilled into the neighbouring Barkin Ladi, resulting in 30 casualties, according to local chairman Danjuma Dakil.

The longstanding conflict between transhumant herders and sedentary farmers over natural resources in central and north-western Nigeria has fuelled bitter competition. Sedentary farmers accuse transhumant herders of plundering their land with livestock, leading to sporadic violence aggravated by climate change and demographic explosion.

Governor Mutfwang criticized security agencies for their reactive approach rather than proactive measures, emphasizing the need for a change in strategy. He pledged relentless efforts to bring the perpetrators of these senseless attacks to justice, with clearance operations set to commence immediately in collaboration with other security agencies.

It’s reassuring to see a commitment to taking decisive action against those responsible for such acts. Addressing security challenges is crucial for maintaining stability and ensuring the safety of the people. I hope that the efforts to address these incidents in Nigeria prove effective and contribute to a more secure environment.

The lack of arrests and prosecutions has been identified as a contributing factor to the ongoing crisis. Governor Mutfwang acknowledged the perception among some citizens that their attackers are being protected, adding urgency to the need for accountability and justice.

Nigeria’s new president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who assumed office in May, has prioritized the fight against insecurity. The government’s commitment to addressing the root causes of the conflict and implementing proactive measures is crucial to restoring peace and security in the affected regions.
