No permission for English players to play Pakistan Super League

UK (Commonwealth) _According to a report, England will not allow its players to compete in franchise leagues that clash with the domestic summer, such as the Pakistan Super League and others, except for the IPL.

Despite the recent announcement that all of its players will be available for the upcoming three Indian Premier League (IPL) tournaments, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has prohibited its players from participating in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) during the domestic season.

The media reported on Thursday, November 28, that the PSL and other franchise leagues, except the Indian Premier League (IPL), would not allow English players to participate due to conflicts with the domestic summer.

The board believes that the new strategy will improve the quality of the domestic game, but they anticipate that it will negatively impact the earning potential of several English players during the home series.

Additionally, players will no longer be permitted to participate in any competitions that conflict with the Hundred and Vitality Blast, according to the ECB. The board affirmed that players will not be allowed to play in leagues that are suspected of being corrupt and will not be allowed to “double-dip,” which is the practice of entering a new tournament after losing to another that is happening at the same time.

Under the new regulation, English players who no longer play first-class cricket would also not be allowed to skip English domestic white-ball matches.

“We can strike the right balance between helping players who want to take full advantage of potential chances to earn and develop their skills and also protecting the integrity of cricket worldwide, making sure we don’t undermine our own ECB games, and handling the health and safety of centrally agreed-upon England players,” said ECB chief executive Richard Gould, adding that this policy gives competitors and professional counties clarity regarding our approach to offering No Objection Certificates.

Next year’s ICC Champions Trophy is scheduled for February and March, so the 2025 edition of the Pakistan Super League is anticipated to take place from mid-March to mid-April and will fall on the same day as the IPL, which is expected to begin on March 14.

Different teams selected the best players in the recent massive auction in Jeddah on November 24 and 25. Among the English players who will compete in the IPL are Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, and Reece Topley.

For sponsorship purposes, the Pakistan Super League (PSL), also known as the HBL PSL, is a men’s Twenty20 cricket league in which six franchise clubs from various cities compete. The Pakistan Cricket Board created the competition in 2015.

The league functions as a single organization where each club is owned and controlled, rather than as a collection of separately owned teams. The top four teams with the most points advance to the playoffs, which end with the championship game. Each team competes in the group stage matches using a double round robin style.

The league has nine seasons under its belt.Islamabad United is the sport’s most dominant team, having won three titles.Lahore Qalandars remained the only team that defended their title after making it through the 2023 season.

In May 2016, the PCB announced that the PSL’s first season had generated US$2.6 million. PCB chairman Ramiz Raja predicted a 71 percent increase in the PSL’s profit in the 2022 edition, which took place exclusively in Pakistan. Prior to the commencement of the season, each club earned Rs. 900 million (US$3.1 million).

Revenue for the 2023 edition exceeded Rs. 5 billion. The money came from a number of sources, such as gate money, title sponsorship, television rights, and other associated rights.

The PSL is a double round-robin competition. The top four teams move on to the playoffs after each team plays every other team twice. Similar to the Indian Premier League, the playoffs employ the Page playoff system.

The league adheres to the rules and regulations of the International Cricket Council. But it also brought the DRS system to T20 cricket, which the International Cricket Council later adopted.
