Northern Ireland students enter WorldSkills competition

Europe, UK (Commonwealth Union) – The Department for the Economy in Northern Ireland extended its congratulations to five outstanding local students and apprentices who have earned a spot to compete in the prestigious WorldSkills event this September.

These five individuals will join the esteemed 31-member UK team in Lyon, France, where they will showcase their skills in a variety of disciplines including cabinetmaking, autobody repair, electrical installation, and robot systems integration, facing off against competitors from around the globe.

Ian Snowden, the Permanent Secretary at the Department for the Economy, expresses his delight in the selection of these talented individuals. He applauds their hard work and accomplishments thus far, highlighting the impressive talent pool present in Northern Ireland.

“It is also great to see our further education colleges, training organisations, universities and employers being represented at a global level and it is testament to the diversity of the training offering available locally.

WorldSkills Lyon 2024 is set to unfold from September 10th to 15th, gathering a vibrant cohort of over 1,500 talented individuals from more than 65 nations. These skilled competitors will engage in a diverse array of 62 distinct skill disciplines.

Five local representatives will proudly display their expertise at WorldSkills Lyon 2024. Among them, David McKeown from Ballymena excels in Autobody Repair, having refined his skills as an apprentice at Riverpark Training and now contributing to James McKeown Accident Repair. Hailing from Magherafelt, Jason Scott specializes in Robot Systems Integration as part of a team effort, leveraging his training at Northern Regional College to enhance AES Global’s projects. Rathfriland’s Isaac Bingham showcases his mastery in Cabinetmaking, cultivated through apprenticeship at Southern Regional College, now applying his craft at Monkeywood Luxury Kitchens and Furniture in Banbury, Oxfordshire. Ballymoney’s Charlie Carson collaborates in Robot Systems Integration, commencing his training at Northern Regional College and furthering his education at Ulster University. Representing Enniskillen, Daniel Knox demonstrates his prowess in Electrical Installation, his apprenticeship journey at South West College leading to his current role at GP Electrical and Security Ltd. These individuals embody exceptional talent and dedication in their fields, ready to leave a lasting impression on the global stage.
