Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ Veteran Kenyan opposition leader, Raila Odinga, has condemned the “unprecedented use of force by the police” during recent anti-government and anti-expense protests in Kenya. Over the past months, the opposition coalition Azimio has organized several days of action against President William Ruto’s policies, leading to clashes with law enforcement and instances of looting. Azimio claims that at least 50 people have lost their lives in these demonstrations, while official figures cite a lower number of around 20.

Odinga accused the police and armed groups of employing deadly tactics against unarmed protesters, with a particular focus on the Luo ethnic group, to which he belongs. In contrast, President Ruto expressed his support for the police, urging them to stand firm against criminals and those seeking to cause chaos.

Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, have criticized the police’s actions and documented numerous cases of extrajudicial killings during the protests. Despite the violence and accusations, Azimio continues to call for peaceful marches and vigils in solidarity with the victims of police violence.

President William Ruto, elected in August 2022, faces growing opposition, as he is accused of exacerbating economic challenges for Kenyans, such as high inflation and the implementation of new taxes.

Calls for dialogue between Ruto and Odinga have been made by the UN, the Commonwealth Secretariat, and Kenyan media, but meaningful talks have not yet taken place. Odinga has expressed openness to dialogue, but the situation remains tense as protests persist.

Kenya is grappling with socio-economic issues, and these protests have emerged as a way for citizens to voice their frustrations and concerns about the cost of living and excessive taxes. As the country seeks resolution, the demand for genuine dialogue and peaceful solutions is crucial to addressing the issues at hand.
