(Commonwealth_ This week, a significant phase of the program aimed at distributing incubators to bolster the rural economy and uplift small-scale poultry farm owners was launched at the Seethawaka Pradeshiya Sabha. The event, graced by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, marked a crucial step in enhancing income generation and improving the nutritional intake of rural families.

The incubators, provided with the assistance of the Chinese government, are expected to directly benefit five families per unit, with numerous other families in the surrounding villages reaping indirect benefits. The overarching goal of this initiative is to boost income generation, enhance family nutrition, increase the country’s overall egg production, and promote self-sufficient home gardens. The program, which commenced at Seethawaka, is set to impact 5,000 people.

In his speech, Prime Minister Gunawardena emphasized the significance of the Chinese government’s support, stating, “The Chinese People’s Government has granted these machines not only to aid our low-income citizens but also to empower women and enhance the country’s gardening initiatives. By distributing these incubators from village to village, we aim to provide nutritious food for children and foster community cooperation to ensure the program’s success. We envision this initiative as a complementary project to our broader self-employment efforts. It has already gained popularity as a reliable source of income in various provinces.”

Reflecting on the historical context, the Prime Minister highlighted Hanwella as the birthplace of this industry in Sri Lanka. He recalled, “When Hon. Philip Gunawardena, serving as the Minister of Agriculture and Food, initiated this venture in 1957, such advanced machines were not yet available globally. The first incubator was installed at the Hanwella Gamsabha office. Today, we must continue this legacy, harnessing local support to preserve our heritage and pride. In these challenging times, improving the living conditions of low-income families is paramount.”

Prime Minister Gunawardena also touched upon a new initiative announced by the President to support female entrepreneurs. He stated, “The President has unveiled a new opportunity to support up to five thousand new businesswomen within each Divisional Secretariat Division. This initiative is open to women entrepreneurs starting new ventures, regardless of existing debts. We encourage these women to seize this chance, be bold, and succeed in their endeavors. There is potential to market locally produced goods within our economy.”

He assured that the Pradeshiya Sabha would offer various training programs to support these initiatives. “As a government, we are committed to providing training for young school leavers and job seekers. The future of our young generation lies in acquiring professional qualifications,” he added.

The incubators were distributed to the villages of Puwakpitiya, Mabula, Weragolla, and Ukgalla, marking a significant expansion of the program. The event was attended by notable figures, including MP Yadamini Gunawardena, Colombo District Secretary K.G. Wijesiri, Seethawaka Divisional Secretary K.S. Dilhani, and numerous local residents.

This initiative is poised to transform the rural economy by empowering small-scale poultry farmers, enhancing nutritional standards, and fostering economic self-sufficiency. The collaboration between the Sri Lankan government and the Chinese government exemplifies a robust partnership aimed at driving sustainable development in rural communities.

As the program progresses, the anticipated benefits extend beyond immediate economic gains. By promoting poultry farming and self-sufficiency, the initiative seeks to create a ripple effect, improving overall community health and resilience. The emphasis on female entrepreneurship further underscores the government’s commitment to gender inclusivity and economic empowerment.

The distribution of incubators represents more than just a technological advancement; it symbolizes hope and a step towards a more prosperous and self-reliant rural economy. The continued support and cooperation of local communities will be crucial in realizing the full potential of this transformative program.
