Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh

The duke was born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark on the 10th of June 1921. Prince Philip was born in to the royal family in Greece. He was educated in France, Germany and then the United Kingdom, he then joined the Royal Navy in 1939. It was in 1939 that he started a correspondence with the young princess Elizabeth who he had met a few years ago.

Prince Philip served during the Second World War, it was at this time he was given the blessing to marry Princess Elizabeth. It was before their wedding that Price Philip was granted the title of the Duke of Edinburgh, their wedding took place on the 20th of November 1947. Prince Philip left active military duty in1952 once Princess Elizabeth took the title of queen. Prince Phillip had four children with the queen Charles, Prince of WalesAnne, Princess RoyalPrince Andrew, Duke of York; and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex.

The prince was a sports enthusiast and helped greatly in developing the equestrian event of carriage driving. He was also a patron and president of over 780 organizations and he served as the chairman of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The prince was the longest-serving consort of a reigning British monarch and the longest-lived male member of the British royal family. Philip retired from his royal duties on 2 August 2017, aged 96, having completed 22,219 solo engagements since 1952, and died on 9 April 2021, at the age of 99.
