Quality Inn Hotel faces backlash over medical travellers

-

Hotels (Commonwealth Union) _ Patients and advocates in the Northwest Territories are urging Yellowknife’s Keskorie Boarding Home to halt its practice of placing medical travel patients at the Quality Inn hotel, citing numerous reports of negative experiences.

The boarding home, operated by Det’on Cho Corporation, is contracted by the territorial government to provide accommodation and transportation services for N.W.T. residents on medical travel to Yellowknife. While most patients stay at the boarding home, overflow accommodations are arranged at local hotels like the Quality Inn.

Edward Wright, a resident of Tsiigehtchic, recounted his experience at the Quality Inn during a one-day medical trip to Yellowknife in September 2023. He described a delay in room readiness upon arrival and disturbances throughout the night, which affected his ability to rest. Wright emphasized the stress and discomfort experienced by residents from smaller communities, particularly vulnerable individuals or those with young children.

Gwich’in Tribal Council Grand Chief Ken Kyikavichik publicly called for an end to sending patients to the Quality Inn, citing numerous complaints about cleanliness, cold rooms, rude staff, and concerns for safety. Reports of physical altercations and residents feeling unsafe further underscored the urgency of the issue.

Rebecca Connolly, vice president of strategy and engagement for Det’on Cho Corporation, acknowledged the significant increase in patient numbers since the beginning of 2023, leading to overflow accommodation at various hotels. While efforts are made to maintain guest standards, constraints on hotel availability pose challenges in addressing patient concerns.

Det’on Cho Corporation is actively engaged in expanding accommodations and addressing feedback from our valued guests. Despite persistent challenges stemming from high demand for rooms and limited availability, we remain committed to enhancing our services. Our efforts to accommodate patients in suitable locations persist amidst these ongoing challenges. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we strive to meet the needs of all our guests and stakeholders.
