Canadians were sharing footage of wintery weather after record-breaking snowfall blanketed the Greater Toronto Area on Sunday, 25 January 2026.
Downtown Toronto received approximately 60 centimetres of snow as strong winds packed gusts up to 50 km/h, leading to whiteout road conditions. The City of Toronto declared a major snowstorm condition, in addition to a significant weather event, as of 1600 hours on Sunday afternoon.
Toronto’s Pearson Airport reported that it was the snowiest day ever, with 46 centimetres of snow. According to the flight tracking site FlightAware, there were nearly 600 flight cancellations at Pearson last Sunday. A winter storm across the central and eastern United States made matters worse. Extreme weather has so far led to at least 7 deaths in the U.S. alone, according to local officials, as reported by NBC News. Energy outages have affected thousands of people.
The Weather Network said that the same system is a once-in-a-generation winter storm. It is responsible for the intense snow across Ontario. It’s also the impending winter storm expected throughout Atlantic Canada.

On Monday, 26 January morning, Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield shared his view of a snow-covered street in a post on X.
City councillor Josh Matlow also posted a photo on X of a vehicle submerged under snow on a residential street. He also shared a message, stating that it would take some time to dig out after the record-breaking snowfall.
Matlow went on to add that he really appreciated seeing how many Torontonians are out there helping each other. Support came in the form of either pushing a car that was snow-stuck or checking on a vulnerable neighbour who may need some support. He added that those who can stay off the roads should make that choice.
Meanwhile, snow engulfed the backyard of York University professor Kota Derpanis, who is presently on sabbatical in Munich. He had shared a photo of his patio table, which was completely engulfed in snow, captioning it as snow back at my place in Toronto.
