India (Commonwealth Union)_ Russia’s proposal to explore a direct railway route to India could open a new chapter in trade between the two countries and strengthen India’s position in an increasingly uncertain global supply chain. Accordingly, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin recently suggested examining a rail connection from Russia to the Indian Ocean, with a possible route passing through Turkmenistan, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan before reaching India. He said Moscow should consider any route that can provide reliable access to the Indian market and the Indian Ocean.

The proposal is still at an early stage. There is no confirmed railway service between Russia and India, and no details have been announced about a final route, construction schedule or passenger operations. Its importance, however, lies in the strategic possibility of creating a new overland trade corridor between the two countries. For India, such a route could provide another option for moving goods between Europe, Russia, Central Asia and South Asia. At a time when geopolitical tensions are disrupting established shipping networks, additional land-based corridors could help businesses reduce their dependence on a limited number of maritime routes.

The Strait of Hormuz is a major example of this vulnerability. This narrow waterway carries the majority of the world’s oil and LNG shipments, so any disruptions there can cause ripple effects on energy prices, shipping costs and global supply chains. Security of major maritime chokepoints has also become a concern, making alternative transport routes more important. So a rail link to India could have implications beyond boosting bilateral trade with Russia. It could help India diversify its trade routes and deepen ties to Central Asia and other regional markets.

Furthermore, it could also give Indian exporters another route to reach Russian and European markets while providing Russia with an alternative pathway towards the Indian Ocean. The project could also complement India’s broader efforts to develop multiple transport and logistics corridors rather than depending heavily on any single route. Greater connectivity could eventually support faster movement of commodities, industrial goods and other products, while reducing supply chain risks caused by maritime disruptions.
There could be longer-term benefits beyond freight as well. If reliable land connectivity is eventually established, it could create opportunities for tourism and greater people-to-people movement between the regions involved. The biggest significance of Moscow’s proposal is therefore strategic. If the idea moves beyond discussion and becomes a viable rail corridor, it could give India another trade gateway, strengthen its role in regional logistics and add greater resilience to global supply chains.
