Safeguarding the British airports

Europe, UK (Commonwealth Union) – Several UK airports will receive extended deadlines to implement advanced security technology, potentially leading to the elimination of restrictions on small toiletries. Failure to comply with the new deadlines will result in severe financial penalties, according to the UK government.

Initially introduced in 2018, the upgraded scanners boast heightened precision in detecting prohibited items. This advancement allows security personnel to operate more effectively, eliminating the necessity for passengers to remove items from their hand luggage. Consequently, the screening process becomes more straightforward, saving valuable time. Moreover, once these scanners are operational, travelers will be permitted to carry larger quantities of liquids through security checkpoints, thereby ending the 100ml limit.

Extensions to the original deadline of June 2024 are being granted to airports mandated to install the new equipment. Passengers are advised to review the liquid and large electronic item security regulations at their departure airport before embarking on summer travel. These extensions, lasting up to a year, place the responsibility squarely on airports to implement this state-of-the-art technology.

Mark Harper, the Transport Secretary, indicated that the implementation of these state-of-the-art scanners will enhance air travel safety and convenience for passengers by bolstering security measures.

“The UK is leading the world with its roll-out of this technology, but it’s important we give those airports yet to meet the deadline a second chance to get the job done. Until they do, passengers should continue to check before travelling.”

Additionally, the government is considering implementing monetary sanctions for airports that fail to meet upcoming deadlines. The utilization of powers granted by the Aviation Security Act for this purpose will be examined and progressed in the ensuing months.

The British government further pointed out that despite these extensions, the UK continues to lead in the deployment of next-generation technology, surpassing other European nations in both the breadth and scale of implementation across UK airports.
