Scotland (CU)_ Scotland’s industrial biotechnology community is projected to generate an annual revenue of £1.2 billion by the end of 2025, surpassing growth estimates by more than £300 million. The forecast was made in the Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Center’s (IBioIC) most recent plan, which was unveiled recently at its annual conference in Glasgow.

The updated National Plan for Industrial Biotechnology, presented by business minister Ivan McKee to more than 300 industry and academic specialists, detailed new goals for Scotland’s bioeconomy. This plan includes the objective of 220 enterprises active in the sector and over 4,000 employees by 2025, which reflects the growing importance of industrial biotechnology in the transition to net-zero emissions.

Following investigation, the IBiolC determined that industrial biotechnology enterprises earned more than £790 million in revenue in 2020, which is up from £189 million in 2012, before the initial iteration of the plan and the establishment of the innovation center. The National Plan’s initial goal is to achieve £900 million in revenue and 2,500 employment by 2025. Since 2012, companies working in the biotechnology sector have seen an increase in yearly revenue of approximately £600 million.

McKee pointed out that the Scottish Government’s National Strategy for Economic Transformation, which was released this year, emphasized that biotechnology is a present and future leading industry for Scotland. He said, “It is encouraging that Scotland’s vibrant industrial biotechnology sector is ahead of schedule to meet targets set out in Scotland’s original National Plan and has ambitious new goals for growth. Our National Strategy for Economic Transformation, launched earlier this year, sets out our plans for the next decade and highlights industrial biotechnology as a current and future key industry for Scotland that is fostering innovative and sustainable ways of using biological processes”. He added, “This includes identifying new market opportunities where Scotland has potential to develop industries like industrial biotechnology by building on our technological strengths.”
