Healthcare (Commonwealth Union) – UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee has designated The Flow Country in Caithness and Sutherland as a World Heritage Site.

This recognition adds The Flow Country to Scotland’s six existing World Heritage Sites: the Neolithic Heart of Orkney, New Lanark, The Antonine Wall, the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh, and the Forth Bridge, all celebrated for their cultural heritage, and St Kilda, noted for both its cultural and natural significance.

The Flow Country Partnership spearheaded the effort for this designation, which was reviewed at the World Heritage Committee’s 46th annual meeting in New Delhi.

Acting Net Zero Secretary Gillian Martin indicated that it is an incredibly significant day for Caithness and Sutherland, and for Scotland as a whole.

Acting Net Zero Secretary also pointed out that the Flow Country is an area of remarkable natural beauty, with its rich ecosystems and peatlands playing a crucial role in our fight against climate change and biodiversity loss. This new global recognition will help preserve the area for generations to come.

She further indicated that she wanted to extend my congratulations to the Flow Country Partnership and everyone who has put in immense effort towards this outstanding achievement. She stated that their dedication and hard work have not only secured UNESCO World Heritage Status for the Flow Country but have also ensured its long-term protection.

“The Flow Country is one of our most precious resources, as a vital habitat for many species and a key site for carbon capture that continues to inform our understanding of how blanket bog can be used to help mitigate climate change,” explained the UK Government Culture Minister Sir Chris Bryant.

The Scottish bog that was declared a unesco world heritage site consists of a large proportion of Sutherland and Caithness. as a new world heritage site, it will show much benefits for the north of Scotland with its capability to attract more tourists. However, tourism at times can be destructive to the environment hence it be necessary for visitors to be mindful of this.
