The attendees participated in a heritage trail around Little India led by celebrity guests, delving into the sights, sounds, and cultural significance of Pongal. The trail also showcased various foods, decorations related to Pongal, and even live cattle on display. The Pongal Open House’s 2024 edition also includes traditional performances and new activities, including tours to a Kranji farm. While some activities are free, others are ticketed, with prices ranging from $10 to $18.

Maria Bhavani Dass, the general manager of IHC, emphasized the aim of enhancing visitors’ appreciation and understanding of the festival in a museum setting. Special performances like “Flutes in the Gallery” explore the harvest and nature cycle through music and dance, bringing an enriching cultural experience to the galleries. She stated, “By bringing the performance element of Pongal to the galleries, it helps people experience the museum culture along with it. It also helps them understand more about the festival and the community celebrating it”.

Further, a cooking demonstration on preparing Pongal, the festival’s major dish, will be conducted by chef Annil Ravindran on January 14. Pongal, a sweet rice pudding prepared in a clay or brass pot, symbolizes prosperity and good fortune as it overflows during boiling. The 30-year-old chef expressed excitement about participating in the festival, highlighting the tradition’s homage to simple ingredients. He said, “It is my first year being involved in the celebrations, and I am super excited to be here. Pongal is a festival where we pay homage to the simplest of ingredients, and I am very happy to carry this tradition forward”.

The festivities will also be complemented by the Pongal light-up, illuminating Little India until February 6. The Little India Shopkeepers and Heritage Association will also host various events throughout January, including cultural shows and Pongal distribution. Those interested can find more details and register for certain activities on the Indian Heritage Center’s website.
