TV News Ramps Up Climate Change Coverage Amid Growing Urgency

In a notable shift, major TV news outlets are dedicating more airtime to comprehensive coverage of climate change, signaling a departure from previous challenges in emphasizing this critical issue. NBC News has launched a dedicated “climate unit,” set to present reports throughout the week, with plans to live-stream a two-day forum on the topic from Georgetown University.

CBS News is running “Eye on Earth” reports across its programs, and CNN recently gained attention for a series of climate-focused “town hall” interviews with Democratic candidates.

This renewed focus on climate change in the media comes after years of sporadic coverage, often overshadowed by other news topics. Bill Weir, CNN’s chief climate correspondent and a former ABC News correspondent, notes that previous efforts in 2007 were hindered by economic downturn and competing news stories, diverting attention from the pressing issue. Now, with mounting urgency surrounding climate change, news outlets are reevaluating their priorities.

NBC News senior vice president Janelle Rodriguez emphasizes the significance of the climate crisis, stating, “This is the biggest story of our time.” While past coverage often delved into the political aspects of climate change, recent efforts aim to focus on the deteriorating environment itself. Chuck Todd, anchor of NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” made headlines in January by devoting an entire hour to climate change, declaring it a non-negotiable issue and dismissing climate deniers.

This shift in media coverage is not seen as a temporary trend, but rather a sustained commitment to addressing the pressing challenges posed by climate change. As the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is expected to release a significant report on the global climate, news executives and experts suggest that climate change will continue to be a prominent feature in the news landscape, recognizing its gravity as a central theme that demands ongoing attention.
