Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ In a remarkable political shift, Sojan Joseph, a mental health nurse in the National Health Service (NHS) who migrated from Kerala 22 years ago, has been elected as a Labour Member of Parliament in the UK general election. Joseph, 49, successfully connected with voters in his constituency by pledging to enhance mental health services, ultimately breaking the Conservative stronghold of Ashford in Kent, southeastern England.
Joseph’s victory over Tory stalwart and former minister Damian Green marks a significant moment, as it also counters the anti-immigration rhetoric championed by right-wing candidates. The far-right Reform UK party secured third place in this highly contested seat, underscoring Joseph’s impactful campaign.
In his acceptance speech on Friday, Joseph expressed his gratitude and commitment: “I am humbled with the trust you all placed in me and fully aware of the responsibilities that come with it. I will work hard for everyone in Ashford, Hawkinge, and the surrounding villages.”
With his background as a local councillor and a BAME (black, Asian, and minority ethnic) Officer, Joseph was well-prepared for this new parliamentary challenge. However, it is his over two decades of experience as an NHS mental health nurse that he believes provides him with the empathy necessary for his role in Parliament.
Joseph’s deep connection with the local communities of Ashford, where he has resided with his wife and three children for over 15 years, serves as his primary motivation. “I take great pride in calling Ashford and Willesborough my home. I have taken part in a number of fundraising activities over the years, including running marathons for various charities and a dragon boat race for the local hospital charity,” he said. Joseph’s commitment to community service is further exemplified by his participation in several international marathons for charity.
“I firmly believe in an inclusive society that works towards achieving the full potential for every individual in the community,” he added.
Joseph’s journey began in Kottayam, where he completed his schooling. He pursued nursing studies at BR Ambedkar Medical College in Bengaluru before moving to the UK. There, he earned a Master’s degree in healthcare leadership, focusing on diversity and inclusion in public healthcare. On the campaign trail, many voters described Joseph as passionately dedicated to improving access to mental and physical healthcare services for everyone.
