South Africa aims to restructure its higher education system

Johannesburg, South Africa (CU)_ The Department of Higher Education, Science and Innovation is actively restructuring the TVET schools and universities of South Africa in order to increase student employment prospects and to re-industrialize the economy. Higher Education minister Blade Nzimande stated during a national skills conference that this initiative will aim at a greater emphasis on apprenticeships and work-based or practical learning as part of college training.

The minister spoke about the importance of practical studies. He said, “It is my intention and plan as the Minister to build and refashion our technical and vocational education system to be apprenticeship based. Ideally, every TVET college student should be apprenticed in industry or in a workplace, rather than the current system of a theoretically biased TVET system.”
