South African President demands a ceasefire

Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has vehemently condemned the unfolding crisis in Gaza, denouncing it as a “genocidal onslaught and slaughter of the people of Palestine.” In a poignant press statement, he drew poignant parallels between the current struggles faced by Palestinians and the tumultuous history of South Africa.

The President, while reflecting on the plight of the Palestinians, articulated a striking resemblance between their current predicament and the historical challenges faced by South Africans. “As we have looked at the sufferings of the Palestinians, we have seen similar features of what the Palestinians are going through as what we, as South Africans, went through,” expressed President Ramaphosa.

With a tone of gravity, Ramaphosa characterized the unfolding events in Gaza as not merely unjust but as a genocidal act. “What is unfolding now, in Gaza, is beyond being unjust. It is genocidal, and that is why we are dubbing it as a genocide against a people and a collective punishment against innocent people,” he declared.

In response to the dire circumstances in Gaza, President Ramaphosa called for an immediate ceasefire. He underscored the urgency of halting what he perceives as a genocidal onslaught, emphasizing the collective responsibility to prevent further suffering.

In a previous stern message, the South African government had issued a cautionary statement to its citizens, explicitly addressing those involved or contemplating involvement in the conflict in Gaza. Expressing deep concern over reports of South African nationals potentially joining the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) to fight in Gaza, the ministry warned that such actions could result in the violation of international law, with individuals involved being held liable for prosecution in South Africa. Notably, the State Security Agency (SSA) is actively involved in tracking down individuals engaged in such activities.

President Ramaphosa’s strong condemnation adds South Africa’s voice to the global chorus expressing concern over the escalating crisis in Gaza. The parallels drawn between the struggles echo a sentiment of shared humanity and history, creating a compelling narrative that transcends geopolitical boundaries.
