Sridhar Ramaswamy tops Snowflake

USA (Commonwealth Union)_ Indian-origin Sridhar Ramaswamy has been named the new Chief Executive Officer of Snowflake, an American cloud computing-based data cloud company, effective immediately. This announcement follows the decision of Frank Slootman, the previous CEO, to retire from his position at the company headquartered in Bozeman, Montana. However, Slootman will continue to serve as the Chairman of the Board.

Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity, Ramaswamy remarked on his appointment, stating, “I am honored to have been chosen to lead the company into this next chapter of growth.” He emphasized the vast potential ahead to assist all customers in harnessing AI for significant business gains. Ramaswamy also outlined his focus on expediting the company’s capacity to deliver innovation to its customers and partners.

Formerly serving as the Senior Vice President of AI at Snowflake, Ramaswamy received an endorsement from Slootman, who expressed confidence in his ability to steer Snowflake through its next phase of expansion, particularly in the realms of AI and machine learning. He said, “There is no better person than Sridhar to lead Snowflake into this next phase of growth and deliver on the opportunity ahead in AI and machine learning.”

Ramaswamy’s involvement with Snowflake commenced in May 2023 when the company acquired Neeva, a private AI-powered search engine that he co-founded in 2019. His contributions have been pivotal in structuring Snowflake’s AI strategy, resulting in the debut of Snowflake Cortex, a fully managed service designed to streamline AI deployment for users. Prior to his service at Snowflake, Ramaswamy held notable positions at Google, where he played a key role in propelling the growth of the advertising business from $1.5 billion to over $100 billion. His extensive experience encompasses leadership positions in various Google advertising products, spanning search, display, video advertising, analytics, shopping, payments, and travel.

Ramaswamy’s professional journey includes research roles at esteemed institutions like Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies, and Bell Communications Research (Bellcore). Additionally, he also served as a Venture Partner at Greylock Partners and presently serves on the board of trustees at Brown University. Upon his new appointment, Ramaswamy joins a distinguished cohort of individuals of Indian origin who lead some of the most prominent American companies. Notable figures in this list include Neal Mohan of YouTube, Sundar Pichai of Alphabet, Satya Nadella of Microsoft, Arvind Krishna of IBM, Shantanu Narayen of Adobe, Nikesh Arora of Palo Alto Networks, Raj Subramaniam of FedEx, and Laxman Narasimhan of Starbucks.
