Sugar production in Guyana experience a 28% increase

-

Commonwealth _ In 2023, Guyana embarked on a transformative journey by injecting a substantial $8.1 billion into the rejuvenation of its sugar industry. This bold investment served as a catalyst, propelling the sector to achieve an awe-inspiring 28% surge in sugar production, a significant leap from the 2022 figures, reaching an impressive 60,204 metric tonnes. Minister Zulfikar Mustapha, during the ministry’s comprehensive year-end review, proudly showcased this momentous achievement, underlining the remarkable progress made within a year. A pivotal milestone aligned with the commitment made in 2020 materialized with the triumphant reopening of the Rose Hall Sugar Estate in September 2023. This symbolic event not only signified a step towards fulfilling a promise but also symbolized a tangible resurgence in the industry. Minister Mustapha, in highlighting the industry’s accomplishments, emphasized the successful replantation of 4,020 hectares in 2023. This marked a remarkable 52% increase in land utilization compared to the previous year’s 2,640 hectares. This extensive land revitalization effort spoke volumes about Guyana’s commitment to revitalizing its sugar sector and expanding its agricultural footprint.

The infusion of funds and strategic planning underscored Guyana’s resolute dedication to modernizing and reviving the sugar industry, paving the way for sustainable growth and increased productivity. Minister Zulfikar Mustapha reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to advancing mechanization and conversion projects within Guyana’s sugar industry. Emphasizing this strategic direction, Mustapha pointed out the decreasing dependence of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) on government funding, attributing this shift to the corporation’s robust policies and effective management strategies. Highlighting the corporation’s progress in its revitalization endeavors, Mustapha noted a substantial decrease in the funding sought from the government. Specifically, there was a notable 22% reduction in the financial support requested in 2023 compared to the preceding year, 2022. This decline in financial reliance underscored GuySuCo’s significant strides towards self-sustainability and signaled a positive trajectory in the corporation’s journey toward revitalization and efficiency.

The minister’s remarks echoed the success of GuySuCo’s internal policies and operational strategies, which have evidently contributed to the corporation’s reduced need for external financial support. This shift not only reflects the corporation’s improved financial health but also signifies a promising trajectory for the overall stability and development of Guyana’s sugar industry. Overall, the revitalization investments and strategic initiatives have not only significantly increased sugar production but also paved the way for GuySuCo’s reduced dependence on government support in achieving its targeted milestones. In 2023, Guyana witnessed a remarkable increase of 54% in sugar production marketed as packaged sugar, up from 48% in 2022. This surge was complemented by the government’s initiation of the Albion and Blairmont Packaging Plants’ construction, aiming to elevate the production of value-added packaged sugar.

Minister Zulfikar Mustapha proudly unveiled Guyana’s foray into diversifying its sugar product offerings by introducing two innovative value-added packaged brands: Albion Gem and Demerara Gold Sugar Stick Sachet. This strategic move represents a pivotal leap forward in expanding and diversifying the spectrum of sugar-based products available in the market. Such initiatives not only add variety but also contribute to the elevation of the country’s sugar industry, catering to diverse consumer preferences and enhancing market competitiveness. Furthermore, these advancements in product diversification have yielded tangible socio-economic benefits. The government’s concerted efforts have led to a substantial increase in job opportunities within the sugar industry. Specifically, these initiatives have generated employment for 4,692 new individuals, adding to the workforce engaged in Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) operations. As a result, by the culmination of 2023, GuySuCo boasted a notable total of 8,294 employees. Looking ahead, Minister Mustapha outlined plans for the conversion of over 5,000 hectares of land within the next two years. This conversion aims to facilitate mechanization for harvesting and mechanical loading, further streamlining and modernizing sugar production processes.
