Support for Voice…

-

Absolutely, it’s crucial to recognize that this year in Australia, an important referendum will take place to determine whether a Constitutional change should be made to establish an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice, known as the Voice. This Voice, envisioned as an enduring and independent advisory body, would play a significant role in offering guidance to the Australian Parliament and Government on matters impacting the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

While this is a momentous step towards empowerment and representation, we also acknowledge that the national conversation surrounding the Voice might bring about various emotions for First Nations peoples. Some individuals could experience challenges to their mental health and well-being due to differing opinions within families, friend circles, and workplaces. It is unfortunate that, in some instances, hurtful and discriminatory views might be expressed on platforms like social media, further intensifying stress for some.

In times like these, it’s incredibly important to remember that support is available. There are free mental health and well-being services specifically tailored to assist First Nations peoples during this period:

  • 13YARN: This 24/7 crisis line, run by and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, offers confidential assistance that you can access from any mobile or pay phone.
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and Medical Services: These services, available across Australia, provide culturally sensitive health care to the community.
  • iBobbly: An app available on IOS and Google Play, designed for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals aged 15 and above. It offers self-help for emotional well-being.
  • Gayaa Dhuwi (Proud Spirit) Australia: Serving as a national peak body, this organization focuses on social and emotional well-being, mental health, and suicide prevention.
  • National Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (NACCHO): Representing numerous Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations, NACCHO addresses health and well-being matters.
  • The Healing Foundation: A national organization amplifying the voices of Stolen Generations survivors and their families.
  • National Centre for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Wellbeing Research: This center has developed helpful factsheets to support First Nations people during the referendum.
  • WellMob: A treasure trove of online resources tailored for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and well-being workers.
  • Centre of Best Practice in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Suicide Prevention (CBPATSISP): An authority in Indigenous suicide prevention, promoting evidence-based practices while honoring culture.

Let’s remember that this period of change can be accompanied by mixed feelings and conversations. However, the availability of these resources and services underscores the support network in place to nurture mental health and well-being throughout this significant journey. We stand together, ready to uplift one another during this transformative time.
