neighboring suburbs and has been compared to the “cultural hub” built in Barangaroo.

“This won’t be transformed next week,” Mr Perrottet said.

“But over years, what you will see here is a completely transformed civic space, which will be beautiful, which then derives culture and character.”

It will have 850 new homes, 15% of which will be designated as affordable housing, while the remaining 15% will be made up of a variety of housing options, including build-to-rent and student accommodation.

The project will extend the southern end of the CBD by redeveloping 24 hectares of government-owned land with 15 new structures that range in height from four to 34 stories.

“This is the busiest train station in Australia,” Mr Perrottet said.

“But we don’t want people just to come through, we want to enliven it, revitalise it and set out a brighter future for the Sydney CBD.”

The neighbourhood had changed through time, but not to the extent it should have, according to the premier, who mentioned “architectural sins” of the past that are currently being “corrected.”

“We want this not just to be a tourist attraction, but an attraction for people right across our city.”

The concept was first floated by the state administration in 2013.

Infrastructure Minister Rob Stokes claimed the idea will “heal” the city center’s “scar,” which was created when the rail line split Surry Hills and Ultimo in 1874.

“Over six hectares of new parkland will be realised as part of this vision,” Mr Stokes said.

Up until September 19, community comments are welcome on the project.

The 39-story tower on the area’s outskirts, built by software company Atlassian, has been under construction for a few days.

It is planned for completion in 2027, and the government has stated that it will “anchor” the Tech Central neighborhood.
