Tackling extreme weather conditions

Australia (Commonwealth)_

In a recent study supported by NRMA Insurance, a subsidiary of Insurance Australia Group (IAG), it has been revealed that a significant portion of Australians lack crucial knowledge regarding extreme weather risks in their respective localities. The research indicates that one in three Australians remains uninformed about the potential hazards posed by extreme weather conditions.

Furthermore, the findings expose a concerning gap in preparedness, as nearly half (48%) of the surveyed individuals admitted to being unaware of how to effectively prepare for emergencies arising from extreme weather events. Astonishingly, despite 35% of respondents acknowledging personal experiences with extreme weather events, 17% of those affected revealed they had to evacuate their homes due to such occurrences.

Julie Batch, CEO of NRMA, highlighted a startling statistic, stating that only 26% of Australians currently have a comprehensive emergency plan in place. In response to these concerning revelations, Batch emphasized the critical importance of proactive measures, asserting that taking preparatory steps significantly contributes to safeguarding oneself, loved ones, communities, and personal belongings.

To address this knowledge gap and foster community resilience, NRMA has joined forces with the Australian Red Cross in a strategic partnership. Given that NRMA claims data underscored extreme weather as the cause for approximately 60% of home insurance claims, the collaboration aims to conduct over 2,000 free extreme weather resilience workshops within the next three years.

This collaboration will see an expansion of Australian Red Cross EmergencyRedi workshops, designed to equip individuals with the skills and knowledge necessary to prepare for various emergencies, including extreme weather events. Kate Miranda, the Australian Red Cross NSW state director, emphasized the correlation between preparedness and effective response and recovery in emergencies. The partnership seeks to significantly amplify the reach of these workshops across communities in New South Wales, Queensland, and South Australia.

The initiative aligns with NRMA’s broader Help Nation campaign, which seeks to educate Australians about their local risks and unite individuals, communities, and organizations across the country. Julie Batch reiterated the urgency of the situation, especially in the face of recent devastating natural disasters, emphasizing the role of Help Nation in enhancing awareness and preparedness nationwide.
