Chennai, India (CU)_ The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning about the possibility of a depression within the next 12 hours. As a result, a red alert was given to around 16 districts of the state on Thursday, leading to the closure of the schools and institutions as torrential rains lashed many districts in Tamil Nadu.
Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Chennai, and Tiruvallur, as well as Puducherry Union Territory were among the major 16 districts of the state to get red alert. In more than 19 districts throughout the state, a holiday has been proclaimed for schools and institutions until further notice. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is anticipated in the districts of Perambalur, Ariyalur, Dharmapuri, Tirupattur, Vellore, and Ranipet.
According to IMD’s most recent notice, the low-pressure area above southeast and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal had developed into a well-defined low-pressure area above southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, beyond the coasts of north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh, with the associated cyclonic circulation spanning over 5.8 kilometers above mean sea level. The weather service has warned that it is extremely likely to turn into a depression within the following 12 hours.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai reported a maximum rainfall of 20 cm in Kundhalam in Tiruppur district, followed by 13 cm in Dharapuram in Tiruppur district, and 12 cm in Thanjavur in Thanjavur district, Tiruppur Collectorate Camp office in Tiruppur district, and Pandhalur in Nilgiris district.
Rain continued to pummel Chennai’s downtown and its suburban districts. Tambaram, Mylapore, Velachery, Ambattur, Saidapet, Chromepet, Royapetta, Parrys, Ekkattuthangal, Kotturpuram, and Adyar Marina have all been hit by torrential rains. The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority has also issued a high alert to south coastal regions of the state and Rayalaseema districts to face any eventuality. For relief and rescue operations, the National Disaster Management Force (NDRF) has dispatched two teams to Chennai and one team each to Chengalpet, Tiruvallur, and Kancheepuram.
