Pakistan (Commonwealth Union)_ Saudi Arabia has taken a major step towards improving maritime security with the launch of a new international initiative to protect some of the world’s most important sea routes. Supported by 13 countries, including Pakistan and Bangladesh, the proposed multinational maritime coalition is a reflection of Riyadh’s growing efforts to bring nations together to protect global trade, energy supplies and freedom of navigation at a time of rising regional tensions. The coalition will focus on securing the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, waterways that play a critical role in connecting Asia, Africa and Europe. These shipping lanes are some of the most heavily traveled in the world and account for a large percentage of worldwide trade and energy exports. Any disruption to these waters could have implications for international supply chains, raising transportation costs and spiking global energy prices.

Saudi Arabia will lead the coalition and host its headquarters, placing itself at the center of a broader international effort to ensure stability in one of the world’s most strategically important maritime areas. The move underscores the Kingdom’s resolve to cooperate with partners to protect international commerce and not let regional disputes jeopardize the movement of goods around the world. The announcement was made after a high-level international meeting hosted by Saudi Arabia, bringing together representatives from more than 50 countries and the European Union to discuss ways to bolster maritime security and increase defense cooperation.

According to Saudi officials, the discussions produced significant progress, including agreements on the coalition’s charter, organizational framework and technical arrangements needed to begin operations. Accordingly, fourteen countries have already endorsed the initiative through a joint statement. Alongside Saudi Arabia, the supporting nations include Turkey, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Sudan, Djibouti, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Jordan, Yemen, Nigeria and Somalia. Saudi officials said additional countries are expected to join once they complete their domestic approval processes, stressing that the alliance remains open to all nations willing to contribute to global maritime security.
The coalition comes at a time when attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea have increased, largely due to actions by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement. The Houthis have targeted shipping linked to Saudi Arabia and announced a naval blockade in the Red Sea, raising concerns over the safety of one of the world’s busiest trade corridors. Saudi Arabia has responded with a series of strikes on Houthi military targets used to threaten international shipping. The Bab al-Mandab Strait is a critical maritime choke point linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean before it continues on to the Suez Canal. Some 12 to 15 percent of all global seaborne trade passes through this narrow corridor, which is vital to the delivery of consumer goods, industrial products and energy supplies. Interruptions along this route can quickly cause knock-on effects in international markets, resulting in delays and increased prices across the globe.
Saudi Arabia says the coalition serves as a long-term international security partnership, not a short-term military response. The main aim is to improve coordination between participating countries, enhance collective maritime defense and safeguard commercial shipping in international waters. By bringing together countries from the Middle East, Africa and Asia, Riyadh frames the initiative as a global effort to protect shared economic interests. The coalition highlights Saudi Arabia’s broader vision to promote regional stability and contribute to the defense of international supply chains that are relied upon daily by millions of businesses and consumers. With more countries expected to join, the alliance could become an important platform for international cooperation in securing vital maritime trade routes and maintaining global economic stability.
