Europe, UK (Commonwealth Union) – British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, often referred to as the ‘British Bill Gates’, faced a devastating turn of events when his luxury yacht sank after being caught in a violent tornado. The sudden and powerful storm wreaked havoc on the vessel, leaving Lynch and his crew scrambling for safety.
The director general of Sicily’s civil protection agency, Salvatore Cocina says his daughter Hannah Lynch and the yacht’s chef were among the missing.
The twenty-two passengers on board the 56-meter (183-foot) sailboat included British, American, and Canadian nationals. Authorities are continuing their search after saving fifteen individuals, including a British girl who was one year old at the time.
The Bayesian’s registered owner is listed as Revtom Ltd and the superyacht can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites. The Bayesian theory, the foundation of Mr. Lynch’s doctoral thesis, is presumably the source of the yacht’s name. Revtom is registered in the Isle of Man with Ms. Bacares, the spouse of Mr. Lynch, listed as the only legal owner. Reliable sources have said that Ms. Bacares has been saved.
UK businessman Mike Lynch, who was recently found not guilty in the US of an $11 billion fraud, is one of the missing individuals after a superyacht sank off the coast of southern Italy, as reported by the chief of the Civil Protection Agency.
Mike Lynch is a name that resonates strongly in the world of technology and business, particularly in the United Kingdom. Lynch is a pioneer in the tech industry, most famous for founding Autonomy Corporation, a software company that became one of the UK’s most successful tech firms. However, his career has also been marked by controversy, particularly surrounding the sale of Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP) and the subsequent legal battles.
In 1996, Mike Lynch founded Autonomy, a company that focused on using Bayesian inference and other advanced algorithms to analyze and search unstructured data—text, audio, video, and more. Autonomy’s software could understand the context of information, making it a valuable tool for businesses dealing with large amounts of data. This technology was groundbreaking at the time and quickly gained traction across various industries, including legal, healthcare, and financial services.
Under Lynch’s leadership, Autonomy grew rapidly. It became one of the UK’s largest software companies and was listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1998. By the early 2000s, Autonomy had expanded internationally, with offices around the world. The company’s success made Lynch one of the wealthiest and most influential figures in the UK tech scene.
According to a UK foreign ministry spokesperson the British officials were coordinating with local authorities regarding the incident and stood prepared to offer consular assistance to any affected British nationals.
Despite many legal challenges, Lynch was a significant figure in the tech industry. He continued to invest in and support various tech startups through his venture capital firm, Invoke Capital, which he co-founded in 2012.
