Carson City, Nevada (Commonwealth Union)_ In a groundbreaking moment for Nevada’s legal system, Judge Tina Talim made history as the state’s first Indian-American judge. Appointed by Governor Joe Lombardo to the District Court, Talim had embraced her role with both pride and a sense of responsibility. Her journey to this historic position underscores not only her professional achievements but also her dedication to serving as a role model for the next generation.

Judge Talim’s career trajectory is a testament to her commitment and expertise. Prior to her appointment, she spent two decades working in the Clark County District Attorney’s Office, where she prosecuted more drug trafficking organisations than any other prosecutor in Nevada. Her extensive experience included managing over 100 criminal cases annually and appearing in every Justice and District Court handling criminal matters. The transition from prosecutor to judge, though important, was not jarring for Talim.

She explained that her extensive public service experience prepared her well for her new role. “I had been a public servant for almost 20 years,” she said, reflecting on her readiness for this career shift. Her judicial philosophy centers on fairness, impartiality, and thorough case reviews, ensuring that each individual who appears before her is assured of a comprehensive evaluation of their case.

Currently, Talim’s court docket includes civil cases exclusively. However, she anticipates a shift to a mix of csvil and criminal cases starting in January. This transition will bring her into contact with former colleagues from the District Attorney’s Office and members of the criminal defense bar. Despite these personal connections, Talim emphasizes that her past relationships will not influence her judicial decisions. “Previous relationships are not going to impact my work,” she stated firmly. As an appointee to an elected position in the Nevada polls, Talim is an independent candidate running for re-election in November’s race for Department 12 Judge in Clark County District Court. She faces competition from Alan Lefebvre, a former president of the State Bar of Nevada. Talim’s campaign focuses on ensuring that the court continues to efficiently handle cases, a concern heightened by delays experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Furthermore, community engagement has been a cornerstone of Talim’s career. At the District Attorney’s Office, she advocated for diversity and community outreach, striving to reflect Clark County’s diverse population within the office. She believes that such representation fosters trust and strengthens community relationships. “When you have an office that looks like the community it serves, that builds trust with the community,” she asserted. In her role as a judge, Talim continues to meet with community members to share her background and values. Her dedication to public service extends beyond the courtroom; she has also had to pause her part-time role as a Pilates instructor to focus on her judicial responsibilities. Despite this, her commitment to serving her community remains unwavering.

Talim’s personal background adds a poignant layer to her story. She moved to the United States from India at the age of eight, and her experiences as an immigrant have profoundly shaped her perspective. Reflecting on her journey, she acknowledges the vast opportunities she has been afforded in America. “Although at my age I know the streets in America aren’t paved with gold, my goodness, the opportunities that I’ve been given in this country have been unfathomable,” she said.

Her move to Clark County, where she chose to settle after leaving Southern California, is a testament to her belief in the American dream. Her parents, who opened the first Indian restaurant in West Los Angeles, instilled in her the values of hard work and perseverance. Talim hopes to pass these values on to her 17-year-old twin daughters, who aspire to careers in medicine. She remains hopeful that they, too, will break barriers in their chosen fields.

Judge Tina Talim’s appointment and her ongoing work as a District Court judge symbolize more than just a personal achievement, as they represent a beacon of inspiration for future generations. Her story underscores the importance of dedication, fairness, and belief in one’s potential, regardless of the obstacles faced. As she continues to serve the people of Nevada, Talim’s legacy will likely inspire many to follow in her footsteps, proving that the impact of her groundbreaking role extends far beyond the courtroom.
