Many theatres were struggling to attract audiences again. However, the film proved to be a turning point for Hindi cinema. The story of Gangubai Kathiawadi is inspired by the life of a real woman who lived in the red-light district of Kamathipura in Mumbai. The film is partially based on S. Hussain Zaidi’s novel, Mafia Queens of Mumbai. It is about a young girl from Kathiawad who is betrayed and sold into prostitution at an early age. Although Gangubai faced many difficulties throughout her journey, she eventually became one of the strongest characters in her area by climbing to power. By the end of the story, she eventually turns from being a victim to the leader of her community. Additionally, as she gained recognition and respect as a madame in Kamathipura, Gangubai continued to advocate for the rights and welfare of sex workers, bringing to light their issues of resilience and bravery, as well as struggles for social equality.

According to stories of her life, Gangubai reportedly met Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, in 1957. During this conversation, she is said to have discussed about the problems that sex workers and orphaned children face. She also allegedly defended her brothel’s survival in the face of widespread criticism from various segments of society. What made the picture so appealing was its ability to draw attention to a narrative that had rarely been discussed openly in popular cinema. By focusing on subjects such as women’s empowerment, societal stigma, and human rights, the film stirred controversy that extended beyond the screen.

Much of the film’s impact is credited to Alia Bhatt’s performance. Her portrayal of the determined and fearless Gangubai received widespread praise from critics and audiences alike. The role earned her some of the best reviews of her career and brought her several prestigious honours, including the Best Actress award at the 69th National Film Awards. In addition, the film also won the National Film Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, shared by writers Prakash Kapadia and Utkarshini Vashishtha. Bhansali himself was recognised for his work in editing and direction at several award ceremonies.

Interestingly, according to information listed on IMDb, much of the film was shot during night schedules because the storyline required a darker visual setting. With an estimated production cost Approximately ₹100 crore ($14 million USD), Gangubai Kathiawadi has grossed ₹211 crore ($30 million USD) in total global revenue within the first few months. Even years later, it still remains an essential part of Hindi Film history. Not only did it achieve impressive box office success, but it also told a unique and significant story about personal bravery, self-discovery and their deep effect on society. Furthermore, the film’s artistic vision and incredible cast have all contributed to its mega success and retained the faith in theatrical cinema.  As a result, Gangubai Kathiawadi has cemented its place as one of India’s most relevant films in the decade.
