Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ Yabagi Sani, the national chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), has expressed concerns about President Bola Tinubu’s decision to appoint a minister of state for petroleum resources from the Niger Delta region. According to Sani, this decision could send the wrong signal and foster a sense of entitlement among the people of the Niger Delta.

Speaking during an interview with Channels Television, Sani emphasized that the focus on appointing individuals from a specific region for this ministry might compromise efficiency and professionalism. He noted that the petroleum sector’s critical issues, such as crude oil theft, require a holistic and unbiased approach.

Sani suggested that the appointment of a minister for petroleum resources should be based on professional competence and the broader national interest. He questioned the wisdom of limiting such an important portfolio to a particular region and proposed a consideration of candidates from various backgrounds to ensure a balanced and effective management of the petroleum sector.

Furthermore, Sani introduced the notion of appointing someone from the North Central region to oversee the Federal Capital Territory portfolio. This proposal serves as a countermeasure to the prevailing regional appointments, highlighting the significance of a balanced and just allocation of roles within the government. By considering such a move, there is a deliberate effort to ensure that governance is inclusive and reflective of the diverse regions, promoting unity and equal representation in the decision-making process.

In summary, Sani’s viewpoint underscores the necessity for a non-partisan and merit-driven approach to selecting ministers, especially in vital areas like petroleum resources. This approach is crucial for achieving efficient governance and tackling national issues impartially and effectively. By prioritizing competence over political affiliation, the government can better address challenges and promote the overall welfare of the nation.
