Titbits of Good News as We say Goodbye to 2022 – Part 1

This year has been wild, and as we conclude the 2022 season, let’s shed some light on the good news that was overshadowed by the many disturbing, tragic and unsettling stories of the war, passing away of the Queen, climate disasters and so much more. While there is a lot to be concerned about, there are some titbits of news to celebrate.

Potential Treatment of the Alzheimer’s disease and HIV/AIDS

The New England Journal of Medicine reported a breakthrough in research for Alzheimer’s disease due to the discovery of a drug called lecanemab which slowed the cognitive decline of patients by 27%.

In February of 2022, scientists announced that a third person had been successfully cured of HIV due to a unique treatment which consisted of transplanting stem cells from the umbilical cord blood. She was also the first female patient to be cured of the disease.

Endangered Species Make a Comeback

After 50 years of scientists losing sight of the Anatolian leopard, one was spotted in Turkey, making it quite the phenomenon of 2022, considering most news about the wildlife are about most species disappearing.

Reports from the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the population of wild tigers have also increased by 40%, and grey wolves from France have also increased in numbers, going from 783 to 921, according to the French Biodiversity Agency.

Nations Strive to Reduce Deforestation

One of the biggest achievements to reduce deforestation was the comeback of Brazil into the plan, with the promise of halting deforestation in the Amazon rainforest.

On the 6th of December, lawmakers of the European Union proposed to ban the entrance of products such as soy, coffee, palm oil, etc. into the EU as these products are considered to be the ‘main drivers of deforestation’.
