Two Indian American students among the 30 Edison Scholars

California, USA (CU)_ Pedro J. Pizarro, president and CEO of Edison International, wished the Edison Scholars, saying, “Congratulations to the 2022 Edison Scholars. They represent a diverse group of exceptional students who plan to pursue studies in STEM fields and create a better world”. On May 6, a ceremony will honor all thirty Edison scholars.

There are 30 high school seniors from Southern California Edison’s service region who have been granted Edison Scholars for the year 2022. Among the 30 Scholars, two of them are Indian American students. All Edison Scholars will get a $40,000 stipend each for a four-year period to pursue academic studies in STEM subjects at a four-year recognized institution or university in the United States.

Rhea Jethvani, a senior at one of the finest high schools in the country, Oxford Academy in Cypress, California, intends to devote her life to cybersecurity safety in order to safeguard her community and raise awareness about this threat. She managed a team that developed IOTAnet, a centralized security management platform that was a finalist in the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs’ Apps for Digital Peace Competition.

Rhea also co-founded her school’s inaugural Hackathon Learnathon, where she led a session on the Fundamentals of Cryptography to emphasize the significance of password encryption. Jethvani wishes to do a major in Computer science. She said, “My pursuit of applying cybersecurity skills to help build a more resistant society is just beginning and I’m excited to protect my community from the evolving danger”.

Monica Pal, a senior at San Joaquin High School in California, studied computer technology throughout high school and intends to continue in college. She attributes her desire to pursue a degree in computer science to two of her mentors: One is her mother, a former chemistry professor who has always encouraged and motivated women in science, and the other person is her cousin, who is presently doing his medical residency and has mentored and guided Monica on programming.
