MANAMA, BAHRAIN, 20 OCTOBER 2026 — A tragedy involving two lives can echo well beyond its place of occurrence. Bahrain expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia following the death of two officers in a helicopter crash in the Najran region, highlighting the importance of relations between the Gulf neighbours during regional tensions.
On 18 October, Bahrain expressed its condolences to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia after the crash of the AH-6i reconnaissance helicopter operated by the Saudi Ministry of National Guard. Bahrain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed condolences to the Saudi authorities, saying that Bahrain stands in solidarity with the Kingdom over the tragedy. The message included a prayer to God for the victims and for the consolation of the families of the officers.
Major General Turki Al-Maliki, representing the command of the Saudi-led coalition for the support of legitimacy in Yemen, reported the event. The statement said the helicopter crashed in Saudi Arabia due to technical malfunctions, killing the crew. The announcement did not include information about the names of the officers or further details about the malfunction.
Nevertheless, the situation regarding the crash has sparked various arguments. On the same day, the Houthi movement from Yemen released a video that they claimed showed a Saudi AH-6i helicopter being shot down by the missile. A report from Reuters stated that there is no possibility to determine what actually happened and confirm the story provided by the Houthi. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia stood with its original explanation stating that the aircraft was downed due to technical problems.
The message of condolences fell within the area of a growing number of problems in the region. On that date, Bahrain welcomed the 168th summit of the Ministerial Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) held in Manama. GCC, in its statement, addressed the need to take action against the Houthis, who were launching missiles onto the territory of Saudi Arabia. Among other issues raised by the statement, there was a necessity to secure maritime navigation, including in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait.
These developments place Bahrain’s expression of condolences within a broader context. The loss of the two officers represents an unambiguous human tragedy for their families and colleagues. Similarly, the responses from other states demonstrate how the events have affected military relations in the Gulf.
Nevertheless, at the moment while facts of the incident are being established, the loss of the two members of the crew remains the most important aspect of the tragedy. Bahrain has issued a message of condolences expressing its support for the ruling regime of Saudi Arabia.
