UK trade envoy visits Taiwan to enhance opportunities

UK (Commonwealth Union) – Lord Faulkner of Worcester, the UK’s Trade Envoy to Taiwan, embarks on a week-long mission to Taiwan, aimed at fortifying the economic and cultural bonds between the UK and Taiwan. This visit underscores the commitment to enhance bilateral trade and investment relations between the two nations.

In July, the UK and Taiwan initiated official discussions pertaining to the new UK-Taiwan Enhanced Trade Partnership, which encompasses critical areas such as energy sustainability, digital trade, and reciprocal investments. Both sides share a common vision of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and have been engaged in collaborative efforts in renewable energy development and climate transition for nearly two decades. Lord Faulkner will lead a delegation of ten prominent British renewable energy enterprises to actively participate in the 18th UK-Taiwan Renewable Energy Conference. Their objective is to disseminate the best practices from the UK’s offshore wind development, encompassing operations and maintenance, as well as floating wind technologies. Furthermore, they will share insights into emerging technologies, including low-carbon hydrogen, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and smart grid solutions. Additionally, Lord Faulkner will facilitate discussions at the UK-Taiwan Net Zero Academic Research Forum on September 26th, aimed at bolstering collaborative research endeavors in achieving a just and sustainable transition to a net-zero economy.

Throughout his visit, Lord Faulkner will engage in high-level meetings and engagements, including a meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen on September 25th. He will also confer with Economic Affairs Minister Mei-Hua Wang to explore opportunities for economic and trade cooperation between the UK and Taiwan. Furthermore, Lord Faulkner will partake in festivities commemorating the 40th anniversary of the UK Government’s Chevening scholarships, celebrating the enduring partnership with Taiwanese stakeholders and Chevening alumni. Finally, he will deliver the keynote address at the prestigious Better Business Awards ceremony hosted by the British Chamber of Commerce in Taipei.
