Growing urbanization is a challenge to most countries: World Bank

Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ World Bank estimates predict that the urban population in Africa will double to over 1 billion by 2042. The continent is experiencing unprecedented urbanization, with Africa expected to host nine mega-cities, each with over ten million inhabitants, by 2040. Cities such as Luanda, Dar es Salaam, Khartoum, Johannesburg, and Addis Ababa are on track to achieve mega-city status, joining the ranks of Lagos, Kinshasa, and Cairo.

Urban areas play a pivotal role in driving trade, attracting investments, and contributing to GDP growth. However, this rapid urbanization poses challenges for African cities. Many local governments are struggling to plan effectively, provide necessary infrastructure, establish efficient public transportation systems, and deliver essential social services to their growing urban populations.
