-

its people’s resilience, particularly their efforts to shun divisions of the past where back in 1994 the world witnessed one of the most horrific genocides of the 90s where close to half a million to 800,000 people were murdered in a period of 100 days and their ambition to be one of the best in Africa. With such high ambitions it is no surprise the University of Rwanda has decided to take biotechnology to the next level by introducing a Master’s program for it.

Biotechnologists often play a vital role in a variety of different fields and industries from genetic engineering with development of heat resistant crops in agriculture to vaccine and novel drug development in the medical sector, application of microorganisms to enhance fermentation in the in the food and beverage industry and the application of enzymes and other biological component to enhance biofuels in the energy sector. Agriculture is most prominent industry in Rwanda with almost 70% of its populations engaged in the industry, hence better crops that are resistant to environmental stress and an improved yield is sure to improve life not just for most of the population engaged in agricultural sector but other Rwandans as well as most of the remaining population are likely to have family members engaged in the industry.

With Rwanda’s plans of expanding genetic engineering and vaccine production and improving the existing agricultural sector within the nation makes the Master’s program in biotechnology a perfect fit to meet the needs of these emerging and existing industries by the University of Rwanda a state institution and one of the country’s oldest universities.
