Sunshine vitamin D, that most of us are unaware is associated with good health, an awareness combined by proper weather we don’t get enough of.

However, an increasing number of medical research, suggesting ideal ways in which serious conditions can overcome with the help of vitamin D. it is increasingly clear that supplements are as effective as metabolizing with exposure to sunlight.

A crucial study indicates, in the British Medical journal concluded that if vitamin D supplements are routinely taken by the over 60’s, this would help to reduce the risk of heart attacks. Previous research has suggested that it will help to prevent dementia by taking vitamin D supplements in old age.

During the covid-19 pandemic, it was reported that individuals who had the most severe cases of covid-19, had low levels of vitamin D.

Over 100 years ago, it was found that deficiencies in vitamin D could result in children having rickets, a condition that results in soft, weak bones and bone deformities, such as bowed legs.

Dr. Milli Raizada, a GP and senior clinical lecturer in primary care at Lancaster University’s Medical School says, vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorous from the gut.

A little daily sun exposure, will balance your vitamin D needs with the skin cancer risks associated with UV. However, it’s better to get your vitamin D from supplements, if someone has a sun-sensitive condition such as lupus or skin cancer.

Vitamin D supplements come in pills, capsules and sprays. To decide what’s the best way to take, a study was done in rats which looked at the bioavailability of different forms of vitamin D supplement including a microencapsulated version, a version where the vitamin D was in a small fat bubble in a liquid, and an oil-based vitamin D, similar to the capsules.

Than the oil-based version, the microencapsulated version was significantly more bioavailable, than the spray-style preparation, the oil- based version was better.

Most individuals take their vitamin D in the morning, but it’s better to take it with your main meal of the day since it has a decent amount of fat in it to help absorption.

Doctors will prescribe vitamin D for you, if your diagnosed by a blood test as being deficient. Depending on how deficient you are, doctors will prescribe accordingly.
