Greenland, Denmark Protest Trump’s Controversial Move

Mass protests erupted in Greenland and Denmark as people protested against US President Donald Trump’s controversial plan to acquire Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory. Demonstrations were held in major Danish cities, including Copenhagen, as well as in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland.

The protests coincided with a visit by a US Congressional delegation to Copenhagen. Democratic Senator Chris Coons, who led the delegation, described the president’s statements about Greenland as “not constructive,” highlighting the growing unease among both Americans and Europeans over the issue.

Trump has repeatedly suggested that Greenland is vital to US national security and has hinted that the United States might acquire it “the easy way” through purchase, or “the hard way” through force. In an aggressive move, he announced tariffs on several European nations opposing the plan. From February 1, countries including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland will face a 10% US tariff, potentially rising to 25% by June until a “deal” on Greenland is reached.

Despite its small population, Greenland boasts abundant natural resources and occupies a strategically significant position between North America and the Arctic. Its location makes it crucial for monitoring maritime activity and providing early warning against potential missile threats.

In Copenhagen, demonstrators held signs saying ‘Hands Off Greenland’ and ‘Greenland for Greenlanders’. Greenlandic politician Erik Jensen stressed, ‘We want to make it clear that Greenland is not for sale, and we will not be annexed by the USA.’ Meanwhile, in Nuuk, the Prime Minister joined the rallies, holding signs that declared, ‘We shape our future.”

According to opinion polls, 85% of Greenlanders are against the idea of the island coming under US control. Several European countries have expressed their support for Denmark, emphasising that the Arctic’s security should be a shared responsibility within NATO. To reinforce this stance, a small number of troops have been sent to Greenland on reconnaissance missions.

While some US officials highlight the possible advantages of American control in Greenland, the island’s people and much of Europe stand together in defending Greenland’s right to decide its future. This isn’t just a matter of politics or strategy.it’s about the lives, voices, and choices of the people who call Greenland home.
