Westmead Hospital launches world-first 3D imaging technology for early diagnosis of melanoma

melanoma in the world, which is a deadly form of skin cancer that kills around 1,300 Australians each year. It is the most prevalent kind of cancer among those aged 15 to 39 and is highly curable when discovered early. According to Professor Fernández-Peas, the technology will be more effective than the existing approach of recording each location with a handheld camera.

The Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF) is now looking for an initial 15,000 participants for its Australian Centre of Excellence in Melanoma Imaging and Diagnosis (ACEMID) project. The scans will be added to a database that will aid in the development of an algorithm that will enable artificial intelligence to diagnose cancer earlier. Professor Fernández-Peas urged residents of western Sydney to register their interest immediately and to receive the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible. He stated, “We are ready to go as soon as everybody gets vaccinated”.

ACRF ACEMID are collaborating with three of Australia’s premier skin research institutions: the University of Queensland, the University of Sydney, and Victoria’s Monash University. They are collaborating to establish a 3D complete body skin imaging network that will serve as an integrated center of excellence for early diagnosis and imaging of melanoma. The Westmead Health Precinct, comprising four major hospitals, four internationally renowned medical research institutes, two university campuses, and the state’s largest research intensive pathology service, is one of Australia’s leading health, education, research, innovation, and training precincts.
