Veteran Nigerian comedian and Nollywood actor Okey Bakassi, has taken on a new and historic role as the traditional ruler of Umuihuocha Autonomous Community, located in the Mbaise region of Imo State. The celebrated entertainer, whose legal birth name is Okechukwu Anthony Onyegbule, was officially inaugurated as His Royal Highness Eze Okechukwu Onyegbule, Okwe II of Umuihuocha Obohia, in a grand coronation ceremony marked by music, cultural displays, and public jubilation.

The event steeped in the rich traditions of the Igbo culture, attracted community elders, traditional leaders, political dignitaries, and cultural enthusiasts. A video from the coronation, shared by Bakassi on Instagram, showcased the vibrant spectacle of drumming, dancing, and royal rituals. Dressed in full traditional regalia, the new monarch was presented with customary symbols of authority, signifying his ascension to the throne.

In a heartfelt caption that accompanied the video, the 55-year-old entertainer described the ceremony as a “special presentation,” signalling a profound personal and communal milestone. The post has since then gone viral, drawing waves of congratulatory messages from fans, colleagues, and admirers, both from within and outside of Nigeria.

Okey Bakassi’s new title, Okwe II, implies a continuation of legacy, as he follows in the footsteps of a predecessor known as Okwe I. While not much has been publicly disclosed about the former ruler, Bakassi’s installment is considered a carefully considered choice by the people of Umuihuocha, who view this appointment as a bridge between modern influence and traditional leadership.

In his acceptance speech, Eze Okechukwu Onyegbule pledged to lead with humility and vision, focusing on peace, development, and the welfare of his people.  “Umuihuocha are peaceful people; I won’t bring anything that will cause problems or calamity in this place,” he stated, expressing his commitment to unity and progress.

This new role is not Bakassi’s first foray into public service. He previously served as Senior Special Assistant on Entertainment Matters to former Imo State Governor Ikedi Ohakim, bringing a mix of creativity and leadership to governance. His background in administration, combined with decades of success in the entertainment industry, makes him a unique figure in Nigeria’s evolving landscape of traditional leadership.

The Umuihuocha Autonomous Community, part of the Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area, is known for its cohesive cultural heritage and active civic engagement. Bakassi’s coronation has not only reignited interest in traditional institutions but has also placed Umuihuocha in the national spotlight. Observers suggest that his influence could attract more attention to the region and open up new opportunities for development and cultural exchange.

Notably, Bakassi is one of the few Nigerian entertainers to take on a role of a traditional ruler, marking a growing trend of embracing cultural stewardship. His transition from a stage to a throne illustrates a broader concept of public figures grounding their fame in service to the community.

In a separate post, Bakassi reflected on the deeper meaning of the honour, calling it a call to “Service to Humanity” and “Service to Community.” The message resonated with many who have followed his career and now see him as a symbol of transformation and responsibility.

Prominent personalities in the entertainment and public sectors have joined in celebrating this achievement. Fellow comedian Gbenga Adeyinka offered his blessings, commending Bakassi’s character and expressing hope that his reign would inspire positive change. Shaibu Husseini, Executive Director of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), also congratulated the new monarch, referring to him with the honorary title “Ichie Na Umuihuocha.”

Preparations are underway for a more elaborate post-coronation celebration, expected to attract religious leaders, cultural custodians, and top political figures. Though a final date has yet to be confirmed, the people of Umuihuocha are already making plans to welcome guests from far and wide for what promises to be a landmark event in the community’s history.

Now firmly rooted in royal duty, Okey Bakassi embarks on a new chapter characterized not by laughter on stage, but by leadership, vision, and cultural pride. His journey from acclaimed comedian to traditional ruler encapsulates the evolving role of public figures in shaping community identity and heritage.
