Aviation and Airlines (Commonwealth Union) _ During the departure from Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, India, a tire of an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner burst, prompting the crew to return to the airport. The flight, operating as Air India flight 143 (AI143) to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, safely landed back at the airport. The decision to return was made after air traffic controllers observed debris on the runway following the aircraft’s departure.

To ensure a safe landing, the aircraft entered a holding pattern to reduce its weight by dumping fuel. After approximately an hour, the plane successfully landed back in Delhi. The aircraft involved in the incident, with the registration VT-NAA, has been taken out of service for maintenance. It was delivered to Air India in August 2017 and has accumulated over 21,000 flight hours and more than 3,000 flight cycles. The timeline for its return to service remains uncertain.

Meanwhile, Air India promptly arranged for a replacement aircraft (VT-AND), another Boeing 787-8, to continue flight AI143 to Paris. However, due to the delay caused by the tire issue, the replacement flight arrived in Paris approximately eight hours later than originally scheduled.

Air India’s top priority is the safety of its passengers, and the airline expressed regret for any inconvenience caused. It assured passengers that their well-being and security are of utmost importance. The incident prompted the airline to emphasize its commitment to safety and maintenance protocols.

VT-NAA, the Dreamliner involved, is currently undergoing maintenance at the Delhi airport. The airline will ensure that the necessary repairs are carried out thoroughly before the aircraft is deemed fit to resume operations.

Throughout the incident, Air India worked diligently to minimize disruptions and ensure that passengers reached their destination. Despite the unexpected challenges, the airline’s focus remained on providing a safe and reliable travel experience.
