LONDON (CU)_With less than six months to go until the UN climate summit (COP26), in a show of support to the United Kingdom’s presidency of the event, government ministers paid visits to several towns and cities which are a leading the green revolution for a net zero emissions future in the country.

Meanwhile, COP26 President-Designate Alok Sharma delivered a speech in which he set out four goals which the UK intends to focus on in the run up to the summit. These goals include the securing of carbon neutrality, protecting natural habitats as well as communities from the impacts of climate change, the mobilization of funds and to initiate collective efforts on climate action.

He also highlighted the United Kingdom’s role in being on the forefront global green efforts, describing the country as “a beacon of green growth”. “It is not a choice between cleaning up our environment and growing economies. We can do both at the same time. Indeed we have done both at the same time. The UK is a beacon of green growth,” he said.

“This is our last hope of keeping 1.5 degrees alive. Our best chance of building a brighter future. A future of green jobs and cleaner air,” he noted. “I have faith that world leaders will rise to the occasion, and not be found wanting in their tryst with destiny. That, in six months’ time, when we are packing up and going home, we will be able to say, that at this critical juncture, each of us took responsibility. That we chose to act. And that we kept 1.5 degrees alive.”
