Mumbai (Commonwealth Union)_ Katrina Kaif has made a successful career for herself in Bollywood but her mother Suzanne Turquotte chose a completely different path. Suzanne sacrificed her luxury life in London and chose a quiet life in a country village in Tamil Nadu, and set herself to the task of helping children and families in need. Her decision reflects a remarkable commitment to charity, education and community service. Suzanne moved to Tamil Nadu in 2008 and began working through Relief Projects India, an organisation focused on improving the lives of disadvantaged communities. She began her new and simple life in a remote village in Madurai, Tamil Nadu with a focus on educating the impoverished kids.

Away from the attention and comfort associated with her daughter’s celebrity life, she chose to live in a rural setting where basic facilities are limited. Her work has largely centred on children, education and creating opportunities for families who have fewer resources. What began as a modest effort through free evening tuition classes for government school children gradually developed into a wider community initiative. Suzanne later expanded her educational work by establishing Mountain View School in 2015. The school initially began as a small nursery for fewer than 30 children between the ages of three and five. Over the years, it grew into a recognised primary school serving more than 300 students.

For Suzanne, the decision to remain in the village has meant accepting a lifestyle far removed from modern comforts. Electricity and internet are often not reliable, so even simple forms of communication are difficult to achieve. Katrina has previously spoken about how she has sometimes struggled to reach her mother due to power cuts and poor connectivity. But, Suzanne has continued working through the trials and she has chosen to stay very close to the community she serves. Her journey has also had a profound impact on Katrina. The actress has spoken with pride about her mother’s work and the values she learned from her. Katrina has credited Suzanne’s kindness, hard work and blessings as an important part of her own journey. She has also supported her mother’s efforts financially, helping the school and other community projects reach more children.

Suzanne’s story stands out because of the personal choice behind it. She left behind the familiarity of London and a more comfortable lifestyle to work directly with children and families in a rural part of Tamil Nadu. Her experience shows that meaningful social change doesn’t always happen in the public eye. Sometimes years of quiet work, patience and personal sacrifice are needed to reach it. Suzanne has dedicated more than 15 years to education and community welfare. Her journey is a reminder that success can also be measured in the lives you choose to improve. Beyond the glitz of Bollywood, her work has left a lasting legacy of service and compassion.
